Reformer vs. Mat Pilates

If you are new to Pilates, one of the first questions you will face is whether to start on a reformer or on a mat. Both come from the same method, and both can be a wonderful way to move. They simply offer different experiences.
At Beau Monde Pilates, you can try both. Our South of Fifth studio is a reformer studio, and our classes at Fontainebleau Miami Beach and Loews Miami Beach are outdoor mat classes. Here is how to decide where to begin.
What is reformer Pilates?
A reformer is a Pilates machine: a sliding carriage on a frame, with springs that add resistance or support, plus straps, a footbar, and adjustable settings. You move the carriage with your legs, arms, or whole body, and the springs change how the work feels.
Many people like the reformer because the machine gives feedback. The springs can make an exercise more challenging, or they can help support you as you learn a movement.
Our South of Fifth studio, at 500 South Pointe Dr, Suite 120, runs small-group reformer classes on custom machines. As one client, Chase B., put it: "The custom machines are SO smooth and the studio is gorgeous!!"
What is mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates uses your own body weight on a mat. There are no springs to lean on, so you rely on control, breath, and focus to move through each exercise.
Mat work is often where the Pilates method begins, and many people find it a great way to learn the fundamentals. It can also be surprisingly challenging, because there is nothing to hold you up but you.
Our mat classes are held outdoors. At Fontainebleau Miami Beach, class takes place on the Ocean Lawn, overlooking the shoreline. At Loews Miami Beach, class meets within Sea Spa, in a serene and luxurious hotel setting. Mats are provided.
Reformer vs. mat: how do you choose?
There is no wrong answer. A few questions can help:
- Do you like equipment and variety? The reformer's springs and settings make it easy to change the feel of an exercise. That might suit you if you enjoy a studio setting.
- Do you want to be outside? Our mat classes put you on the lawn at the Fontainebleau or at Sea Spa at the Loews, with the Miami Beach morning around you.
- Where are you staying or living? South of Fifth is in South Beach. The Fontainebleau is in Mid-Beach. The Loews is in South Beach near Lincoln Road.
- When are you free? The reformer studio is open seven days a week. Hotel mat classes run in the morning on set days (see below).
All of our classes are open to all levels, including beginners. Instructors, trained in both classical and contemporary Pilates, give guidance and modifications along the way.
